WordPress is designed primarily as a content management system, with blogging at the heart of that. This makes it very simple for users to add content from the Dashboard and have it displayed at the front-end. The aim of this document is to give a brief overview of how to accomplish this.
Creating a blog post
The first thing you’ll need to do is login to the WordPress dashboard. To do this, go to https://talent-ed.uk/wp-admin and use your username and password to gain access. This will bring up the WordPress dashboard – sometimes referred to as the “back-end” of the site.
From this screen (pictured above), you can hover over the Posts menu item on the left hand side, and then click Add new.
This will bring up the Add a New Post screen (pictured above). The website runs on the Divi theme, which is persistent across the site. Clicking the Use the Divi Builder button will activate that for this page, but you can ignore it in this instance.
The main things to focus on are the Title box, the Divi Page Settings, and the WYSIWYG editor – which is the main box pictured above. ‘WYSIWYG’ is an acronym for ‘What You See Is What You Get, and means exactly that; whatever you enter into that box, the website will display that to the end-user. You can include images, embed YouTube videos, add in bullet points and indented paragraphs, etc, and the formatting will carry across to the end result. To add images, click the Add Media button above the WYSIWYG editor. This will allow you to choose from a picture already in the library, or upload one.
Enter the blog post title and content in the relevant boxes, and then in the Divi Page Settings, change the page layout to No sidebar. The reason for this is to keep formatting consistency across the website.
Before you click Publish, scroll down the page.
Here there are three more settings to configure: Catagories, Tags, and the Featured Image.
WordPress allows you to group posts in two main ways. Categories are generally fixed groupings that for specific articles or posts. Tags, on the other hand, are generally a little more free-form. Both are important in terms of classifying the post, and can be useful for SEO.
If desired, the blog posts page (see below) can be edited to only display blogs from certain categories, or can be broken down to show the categories in different sections.
The final thing to consider at this stage is the Featured Image – this will be the image that appears at the top of each post, and will also feature in some instances of sharing the article.
Once you have added all of the above, scroll back up and click Publish. If you wish, you can also click Preview to see exactly what the final product will look like, or Save Draft if you wish to return to this later.
The blog page
Once published, the blogs will automatically be added to the blog page, with the latest blog showing first. This page can be adapted to suit, but at the time of writing is currently laid out in a standard layout.
